EDN 205

  • Today (Wednesday, 7th March), We started our class with the meditation. Though I practiced it before in my high school, I didn't do it as I am trying now since we are not given the detail reason behind to do the meditation, as we are giving now in the college by the tutors.I hardly constrate on my breathing but still than I am trying after knowing the benifits of it. I understood that if we practise it more and more, there may be a time where it becomes habit, so I am trying to do my best to become one of the experts.
  •  8th March, Thursday, we began our class again with meditation. After that ,we in the group discussed and made the presentation to the class on the word meaning of five words, as Strategy, Method, Skill, Technique and Approach. From this class I came to know that though the words differ it means the same, if we really understand each individual words like Technique and Skill, Approach and Method.
  1. Strategy in teaching means a plan of action to teach.
  2. Method/Approach means a way of doing.
  3. Technique/Skill means a way of carrying out the task(personal).

Q. Differences between Teaching Strategy, Teaching Method and Teaching Skill.

1. Teaching Strategy : it is a plan of actions to achieve a goal or objectives.
- it has a purpose and in sequence of a activities to suit the context.
Eg: when a teacher teaches thought QUESTIONING strategy to check their previous knowledge or their understandings after the lesson.

2. Teaching Method : it is a particular way of teaching used to carry out the strategies.
- a teaching style in which a teacher selects, coordinates and applies teaching skills, techniques and processes.
Eg: solving Math problem with different ways of style to one Question.

3. Teaching Skill : the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc to do something well.
- its more specific and its a personal character to show.
Eg: Teacher redirecting, pausing, reinforcing or structuring the asked Question to make the learners clear of the instruction.

* The character of the Effective Teacher will be;
  1. kind enough to share the knowledge,
  2. punctual ,
  3. frank and approachable by the students at any time,
  4. respecting the learner's view even if it is wrong,
  5. passion for the profession,
  6. use different types of strategies for various learner's,
  7. role modle,
  8. concern to each students,

- Today(14th March), we started our class with the daily set Meditation. We in the group have done with a small presentation on Inductive Teaching Strategy in which I came to understand that Inductive Teaching Strategy is an inquiry/ discovery based learning whereby, the learners from what they know to unknown, concrete to abstract and simple to complex.

- Under this topic we have sub-headings as follow;
1. Concept of Inductive Teaching Strategy,
2. Purpose of ITS,
3. Procedual steps,
4. Role of Teacher, and
5. Merits and Demerits of ITS.

1. Concept of Inductive Teaching Strategy,
 -  Inductive Teaching Strategy is an inquiry/ discovery based learning whereby, the learners from what they know to unknown, concrete to abstract and simple to complex, which means that, the learners with the previous set knowledge will understand and could make generalization to come up with the proper Definition.
Eg: students defining the meaning of plant, after the teachers explanation of the parts of the plant and their functions.

2. Purpose of ITS,
  • motivation,
  • enhancing class participation,
  • team work,
  • common goal,
  • interesting/ interative,
  • learning by doing,
  • student centered learning,
  • discover course content,
  • long term learning (students thinking and digging the evidences)
3. Procedural steps,
- there are two types;
                            - 6 phases
                            - 4 phases

4 phases

i) Open-ended Phase
- providing examples and non-examples of the concept.
- students observes and describing.
- again giving more examples for convenient.
- student understand and know the similarities and differences.

ii) The Convergent Phase
- prompting (identify the patterns).
- critical attributes.

iii) Closure
- could make definition by explicity.

iv) The Application Phase
- application of definition with additional examples.
- transfer

4. Role of Teacher,
  • provide guidance (scaffolding)
  • modeling
  • concling
  • prompting and facilitating
  • cooperative
  • democratic classroom learning
  • design activity
  • questioning and inquring
  • giving opportunity to students
  • enhancing thinking
  5. Merits of ITS
- involves observation, inference, classification and comparison.
- used at all levels of study at varying degress.
- incorporates all the questioning techniques (prompting, probing and content review).
   ensures greater interaction among learners, teachers and the materials.
-  discourage wild guessing as it needs evidences.
- motivates students to find and learn more.
- students are activated yo learn better.

Demerites
- time consuming
- minimum content coverage
- needs verification; some of the verification have to be done in deductive strategy.
- its frustrating for different learners.
- teachers role minimize
- all the topics cannot be taught in ITS

Deductive  Teaching Strategy;

Example - Attribute - Generalization

Definition : Deductive Teaching Strategy is the strategy in which, Principles or Generalizations are presented   initially followed by application or testing of these principles.
It is basically leading the students from unknown to known, abstract to concert or complex to simple.

Purpose;
  • Teacher centered approach (stds taken as blank slate).
  • This strategy creates dependency in students, limiting their thinking ability.
  • Its basically use to help students with learning disabilities to enhance their learning.
Phases of DTS;
  • presentation of abstraction.
  • teacher illustrates it with examples.
  • students give examples and apply them in new situation.
  • student restates the concept/ definition that they have learned.

Advantages of DTS;
  • less time consuming.
  • logical interlinking of the elements is encourage (diff. from rote learning).
  • school materials/ curricula can be easily taught throught this strategy.
  • includes all levels of Questions.
Disadvantages;
  • students are not actively involved.
  • may not be challenging for brighter students.(teacher centered approach).
Roles of Teacher;
  • teacher needs plan and prepare details information including the materials.
  • provide guidence as scaffolding.
  • most of the work needs to be done by Teacher (teacher centered approach).

  1. Thank you Tshering,

    you will definitely get the hang of focusing on breathing and it will really help. Reflection is basically about how things are related to you or how you can transfer what you have learnt. Think about it. This is your page and you can write a lot in it.
    Cheers!
